We can assist your business, university, college, municipality or organization to create a dynamic and professional strategic plan to achieve the goals of truth and reconciliation within the context of UNDRIP, the Canadian Constitution and provincial legislation. Our approach is to work collectively to ensure Indigenous constitutional rights and First Nations treaty rights are upheld and respected.
“The road we travel is equal in importance to the destination we seek. There are no shortcuts. When it comes to truth and reconciliation, we are forced to go the distance.” Justice Murray Sinclair, Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada
Steps to Reconciliation:
· Building individual, trust-based relationships with Indigenous communities.
· Recognizing the failures of the past and building a bridge to a better future.
· Developing a strategic plan that is best suited to your organization’s vision, mission and values.
· Creating an action plan that supports the achievement of goals and objectives.
· Establishing measurables to ensure objectives are being met and where further work may be needed.
· Developing new roles and structural/ procedural approaches that best fit your organization.
· Creating culturally safe spaces where Indigenous Elders, Knowledge Holders and community members can contribute their knowledge and expertise to issues that matter most to your organization.
· Enriching organizational and public spaces with messaging on objectives, goals and achievements.
· Provide support for senior employees and organizational leaders to advance operational planning and execution of Indigenous programming.
· Provide educational support to employees about the principles set out in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action, the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls’ Calls for Justice, as well as the United Nations Declaration of Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).
· Develop a communication strategy to ensure that all members of the organization and the public recognize the contributions of Indigenous people to the fabric modern society based on their enduring relationship to the land and the local environment.
· Provide free and publicly accessible educational tools, events and resources that best illustrate the organization’s commitment to working with Indigenous partners based on mutual respect and ongoing collaboration.
· Establish a multi-disciplinary advisory group to inform senior level decision-making and goal setting.
· Co-develop research methods, interviews and community-specific protocols in a respectful and formalized manner, including protocols for the ownership, control, possession and access to Indigenous data and cultural history (OCAP).
· Undertake organization-wide surveys, research and interviews to ensure Indigenous histories, experiences, world views and knowledge systems are appropriately implemented and conform with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.
- Establish mechanisms for Indigenous recruitment, educational support and working with Indigenous-owned businesses as fundamental to organizational goals and strategic planning.
